Mrs. Adolphus Smith Sporting the "Blue Stocking"

Fern addresses an issue that perhaps is what had a huge impact on women's succession in education and business.  This piece was written in 1853 but as I ponder about life today, it is spot on.  It seems that the focus of this piece is the mother that is trying to finish a piece for an editor.  However, throughout the short bit of work we experience her accomplishing, she can barely complete a sentence without being interrupted by her children or husband. I found that Fern is showing that women are not incapable of the work or education of a man, in fact it seems that men and children hold women back from reaching their goals at times.  As hard as this woman tries to finish, she eventually sets everything aside to attend her children that her husband cannot seem to handle without her.  I think women today can handle a job, marriage, and children, but it is certainly not easy to juggle.  However, no matter how far along we have come since 1853 families still tend to rely on the mother/wife.
